Hello, thank you for your help in advance. I recently bought this north face mountain jacket on ebay and it has some differences than an old mountain jacket I have. The stitching seems to be the same as my old jacket, but there are some differences. I am not sure if the differences are due to the year the jackets were made or if this jacket is a fake. The differences are, 1 no napoleon pocket. 2, both outside pockets open by zipping them up. 3, all inside pockets are in same spots as my other jacket, but zippers open in opposite direction. 4, there seems to be less Velcro on wrist. One of the pics shows this. On my old jacket there was more Velcro to adjust how tight to make the wrists on this jacket there is only enough Velcro to have the wrists tight. also no gore tex embroidered on lower sleeve. Thank you for your help. here are some pics... http://www.flickr.com/photos/jacob-bailey/sets/72157623456045233/

This jacket looks quite old...
But to your points: Normally all pockets should be closed if the zipper is zipped up und opened if down - I haven't seen any jackets with opposing system yet (even from other vendors).
The arrangement and/or adding/removing of pockets is changed within the production years if TNF notices that another arrangement of the pockets is more useful. Maybe the Napoleon Pocket was added this way...
But I can't tell you anything 'bout the authenticity of this jacket - maybe you're asking TNF directly.

If you look at the size label, you'll notice that it's bi-lingual except for the Medium. The label format is not consistent with what I've seen previously.
There are members here who are very familiar with these earlier models who'll be able to tell for sure, but I think this is a knockoff.
How do the small details & materials compare to your other jacket?

tnf1234, Welcome to the site. Jacket looks consistent with a Mtn. Jacket from the early 90's, appears to be a 1994. I think my oldest jackets are 96 and up, not a big fan of the hood clips. Steve has this model jacket, perhaps he will chime in. DHT

I stand corrected. Looking through vtgearoutfitters website I saw English only size labels pre '95. I still haven't found this exact configuration, with the thinner label style, but as has been noted before pre vfc buyout fakes are rare.

tnf1234-I do not have access to my older Mountain Jackets and won't for about 2 weeks, and can't remember which direction the pockets zip open. I would not be surprised of the pockets opened in another direction since the Mountain jacket is specifically designed for Mountain Climbing and the pockets opening a different make make sense? In regards to the Napoleon pocket, only the mountain guide had the outside Napoleon pocket, the black swatch of material across the butt, and the bototm pockets are below the powder skirt vs. above the powder skirt on the Mountain. The mountian is waist length, the Guide hip length. I think jacket in question is a Mountain. I looked at my Guide and it has pockets that zip down to open.
See Ya, Steve

blackdog,
Here's a jacket from VGO from 95 with the same style size tag.

tnf1234 - in regards to your question about the pockets zipping the opposite direction, yes this was the case on some of the older mountain jackets. I have seen this on a few that have come and gone and was surprised at first but then realized it is nothing to worry about.
The velcro I have also noticed before, and I think that they made it thicker in latter years to hold better. Browsing through the 94 catalog now and everything with your coat looks on target.
I do want to ask, what is the black portion above the size tag? Is it a gore-tex label folded upward?
